Well I'm up for the day at 2 in the morning. Serves me right for following my hibernation instinct. Went to bed at about 6:30 Sunday night. It was just so damned cozy.
Correction. In the last entry where I said I had the pie in the fridge. I obviously did mean the freezer.
Christmas day. Having survived the dinner from the previous night. Cooked up a small roast, some mashed potatoes reheated on the stove top, candied carrots. And some instant biscuits. As I've already mentioned, the dessert was wonderful.
We set up some nice wooden snack trays in their bedroom for the dinner. Don't ask. Was kind of cool. Brother in law wasn't terribly drunk, if he drank at all. We'd have breakfast this way too.
Pancakes. Apparently this was a tradition of my brother in laws. Used to make them from scratch, but that became a hassle. So we just use Bisquick now. Fried up some bacon too. All and all a nice treat.
There were no gifts this year. Save that we do have a house to live in. Christmas isn't supposed to be about gifts anyway. I think we had a good one.
We actually had a white Christmas. It had snowed the perfect amount. Just some on the cars and lawns and it was gone by night. I went out for a ride in the early afternoon. Sick of all the togetherness and wanting a smoke.
I just drove. It was kind of neat. I was surprised to see some other people out too. For the most part it was quiet. Not much traffic of any kind. A few places open here and there. Just pleasantly drove around. It's one of the things I do enjoy.
Got home. Lunch. Dinner was. Sister had chemo sickness. Think we had some chicken breast I bought. For the life of me I don't remember the sides. Finished off the cannoli cake. Like I said the perfect size. And that was it.

Friday Night
It had been a rather long day. The work weeks end had at last arrived. Nearly got killed leaving my parking lot at work. My fault to an extent. Car was trying to make a left. No traffic, made my right and all of a sudden there was a vehicle right behind me. Mind you I didn't hear her brake hard.
Think she'd just made the lane was getting to ramming speed. I say she because I got the obligatory yell out the window of asshole. Did the usual raising my hand in apology and made a quick right. Decided on a different route home.
Got home safe enough. Brother in law just woke from his first drunken stupor. Apparently they bumped my sisters chemo to Monday, that would be today. She was to sick to get to the G.P. to have blood work. I was just unamused.
6:30. Spoke to my sister. Brother in law came in with his drunk sleepy voice. What are we doing for dinner. She claimed not to be hungry, I said I'm going to the bathroom. I just didn't feel like dealing. Even I need a night off. Sat in my chair in my room. Enter the brother in law.
I been trying to she what she wants for dinner all day. She doesn't know. I opened my eyes at that point. I was tired. Told him the fridge had food. Meatloaf, pasta. He went in to their bedroom, made the report and came out stomping his feet.
I went to the kitchen, where he was doing his mumbling to his drunk assed self. Said he didn't want to discuss it. I pointed out that I was only there to finish my salmon salad for dinner. I did. He made a grilled cheese and I decided to go out.
It was a comfortable enough night. And it beat sitting around the house. Sister called me in, told her I was going. She said she didn't know what to have for dinner. In the end. I heated her some pasta and the last of the meatloaf. Rocket science huh?
It was to late to just dig up plans. 40's are often not like the 20's. Most everyone had plans. So I grabbed a smoke and determined my options. Got gas. Passed a few bars. As someone who just doesn't drink anymore, there is no reason to hang in bars for me.
Mind you, if I could I would. I always enjoyed the bar scene. Oh the tales I could tell. As could a lot of you I imagine. And if you found the right bar, it could be a very comfortable fit. A couple of pints and it was just allright.
I no longer had the option. More sad was I no longer had the desire.
Music. That was what I wanted. Some nice blues or something. As I drove around that was when I realized just how out of touch with the music scene I'd become. I found none. Promised myself I'd do better next week.
So I drove and had a nice smoke. Got home about 10. Sister was full of interrogating questions. She hates when I go out.
My brother in law too. To and extent. Means he has to be on call for her.
As I said they both live to be home. Only leaving to work, now that's just my brother in law. My sister is imprisoned, of her own making and now by the cancer. I try to keep a good spirit for them.
But sometimes. Just sometimes. I need to get out for myself. I've even given thought to next Friday. I know of a place that has a piano player. See what happens.

Let us finish the Montauk expedition...
It's 7 in the morn on a Saturday of a very busy weekend. Can't begin to think how many entries that will take to write. oh well on with the previous show.
The wind was whipping, saw people surfing, it was kind of cool. I would have stuck around a little, but had those people in the car. I glared at the stairs leading down. It was the last 2 sets that were most like the old statue of liberty Im mentioned earlier.
The woman, not overly disappointed about her chucacabara missing a meal, gave me instructions on how to go back down the first set. Backwards. Yes backwards, I told her I was thinking about just going down them on my buttocks. She said that works as well. I opted for backwards.
And let me credit the keeper of the chucacabara for a moment. We are not talking some buff 20 or 30 something woman. I'd say between 45 and 60, that's a lot of stairs. In fact I didn't really see any young people manning the museum. Anyway.
Not going into great detail, but let's just say going up 134 stairs is easier on the legs than going back down. My legs would be sore for 3 days. Upon reaching the landing I thanked the door monitor and made my way back to the parking lot. I did turn to get one last photo of the lighthouse with the flag waving in the wind. Very nice. I opted for the handicap ramp back up to the parking lot instead of the stairs. My thought was no more. Once back in the car found out that by the time my sister had looked I'd already gone back inside. Oh well. My guess she was busy playing a game on her phone. She's more on the side of one of those people that get aggravated when distracted, okay sorry but they're a feature from here on in.
One quick side note. She had asked my why the surfers were polishing their boards. Said I'd check with a friend of mine, not wanting to be bothered. Then it hit me. The surfer right next to our car came back and I asked him. He said they waxed their boards to make them less slippery so they dont' fall off. Just thought that was a cool thing.
So out of the parking lot we went, in search of food. We had passed some sort of burger shack. We stopped, it was packed. Brother in law and I went in. I was thinking of the 3 hour ride back home. It seemed very greasy, thought about my car mates. You see my sister does not handle food as well as she used to, she doesn't know it though. My brother in law? Well he gets nauseous if he eats and the car is moving. So I thought pass.
We found Old Montauk highway which my sister wanted to go down. She'd known it from times past. A hilly road by the ocean, lots of places to stay and such. Unremarkable to me. It rejoins the main road after a bit.
Here's where it gets a little silly and we should have brought them lunch. My brother in law, doesn't eat seafood, at all. When in Montauk you see a lot of? Yeah. So as if we were in another car my sister tells me we have to find food, "he gets a headache when he doesn't eat." Which by the way is sad but true.
Well, I find a deli after a couple of towns, newly opened, they get an exciting chicken hero on a roll, unfortunately they put onions on it. The children complained but ate it anyway. While I wandered in the scattered sun outside the car, remember he gets ill if he eats and car is moving, I was wishing I'd brought a cigar.
We got back underway. There was only 1 more thing I wanted to see, my sister also. It was a place that had huge sculptures. I mean these were things you put on estates, not the housing place where I live. Huge gorgeous and fun. Took some photos, I loved the pink elephant. After all those cartoons, and my years of drinking, this was the first one I'd ever experienced. Didn't get the photo of the dragon my sister wanted.
And here is where I learned that the IPhone camera is nice, but not for pictures you really want to see the resolution on. There was this awesome sculpture of horses rearing. Upon closer examination you realize they are Mermaid-Horses. Oh it was so cool. The photo on the phone came out alright. But you just cannot make out the tails. It was fun and I want to go back with my camera and get some real photos.
We made it back home by 4. I went out for a smoke and returned at 5 ready for dinner. I'd made it easy on them, well me. Said we'd do take out for dinner. This way I wouldn't have to cook my own birthday dinner. There was some dickering about the restaurant. I said I'd chosen, it was my birthday. It was enjoyable.
The next day was food shopping. Took my sister along. We got some stuff to make my birthday cake. A very simple pudding mix in a prepared graham cracker shell with real whip cream topping. It was supposed to be fried chicken, but it didn't go off well at all. I remember at one point standing there as my sister in her wheel chair looked at me. "What do you want as a side dish" she shot down my suggestion and said, as if my brother in law wasn't right behind her, he won't eat that. I gave up at that point and said it was my birthday meal, make what ever the Hell you want, I'm not cooking.
Sorry after about a month I don't remember anything about the meal in general. Did not have fried chicken. No birthday cake. Trust me this is nothing new for me. However I did make the cigar lounge where I was welcomed. That's something huh?

continuation of Saturday
Woke up rather well recovered, neck bothering me minimally. At least I could now drive safely. I was leaving as they returned home. On my way out I snagged 2 cigars, a new shipment had arrived on Friday.
Think it was after 2 in the afternoon, I needed gas so away I went. I had intentions of doing some Christmas shopping. Of course they've given me no ideas, just didn't happen. Was just stressed enough to need to relax with a drive and a smoke. Rather enjoyable.
I arrived home. Brother in law, drinking, but cleaning the front room. Of course I joined in, was about 4:30. I then started on the little pile of canned goods and such in the kitchen. Back when I started declining things just started stacking there. In my tiny kitchen stuff was extending a good 6 inches past the wall. So I started organizing a bunch of non perishables down stairs. It was a good effort.
After vacuuming, we got the tree up. A little fiberglass model that I like, sits atop a lighted spinning disk and changes colors. It's got a little history for me. It was time to wake sister up. Real pain, she wasn't hungry, of course that would be bullshit. Wound up doing heroes from a local place.
I concentrated on my next task. Making some oven baked garbanzo beans. Very good stuff, they come out nice and crisp. Had actually promised to bring some in to the lounge on Sunday. They came out nicely.
Brother in law passing out on couch I woke him a few times. I wanted a quiet night. Got the usual drunken yeah yeah yeah response. I also wanted to watch some television in the front room. He went to bed, sister woke up asked for something, he had a screaming Lizzy fit.
